Kettering City Council on Aug. 13 approved a package of resolutions authorizing purchases, grant acceptances, reimbursements and supplemental appropriations.
Key approvals included a resolution to purchase approximately 5,500 tons of road salt for the 2024-25 winter season at an estimated cost of $350,130 (the city budgeted $180,000 for salt this year). Public Service staff told council that bid prices for the upcoming season were about 30% lower than last year, a change staff said will reduce purchase costs if the city chooses to buy now. "The bid prices for this go round for the upcoming season were about 30% lower than last year's pricing," a staff member said.
Council also authorized competitive bargaining to replace the security system at the Kettering Municipal Court with an estimated budget of $50,000; accepted a $35,773 grant from the Ohio Arts Council to support general operations at the Rosewood Arts Center; authorized application for a Cyber Ohio Local Government Grant (up to $20,000, with a 20% city match) to advance cybersecurity initiatives; accepted $11,047.67 from the state disaster relief program to reimburse personnel costs incurred during the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse; and accepted a $6,000 donation from American Legion Post 598 through the Kettering Police Foundation to purchase four automated external defibrillators.
Council also approved a supplemental appropriation of $555,974.46 for current expenses and other expenditures for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2024. City staff explained this appropriation advances previously discussed community development block grant actions and the American Legion donation appropriation; staff clarified that the Ohio Arts Council Rosewood Arts Center grant is not included in the current supplemental appropriation and will be appropriated in a future action.
