Council denies request to allow liquor sales at Southwest Mart gas station

The City Council unanimously denied a request to rezone property at 3718 Southwest 9th Street to allow liquor sales at a gas-station convenience store.
Shazi, who identified themself as the store manager for Southwest Mart, told the council the change would “enhance consumer convenience, increase local revenue, and ensure responsible alcohol sales” and described proposed measures such as ID checks and limited sales hours. “This initiative aims to enhance consumer convenience, increase local revenue, and ensure responsible alcohol sales within our community,” Shazi said when speaking in favor of the permit.
Planning and zoning had recommended denial, and council members noted significant opposition from neighboring property owners. One councilmember moved to deny Item 52A; the motion was seconded and passed 7–0.
The council did not approve the applicant’s request to continue the matter or direct additional staff actions; the denial closes the immediate request to permit liquor sales at that site under the proposed zoning change.
