The Michigan Board of State Canvassers received an update on an ongoing signature‑verification review related to a challenge against Cornel West’s nomination.
An unidentified staff member told the board staff had identified circulator blocks for the affected circulators and were comparing signature blocks to samples the West campaign provided, such as driver's license samples. “We are only taking the circulators from the sample and then matching those,” the staff member said, describing the process as time‑consuming because of the volume of sheets involved.
The staff member said the challenge is limited to the random sample selected for the petition challenge and that, while the board could consider expanding the review, doing so would require a separate scope and process decision. Staff said they aim to provide a written staff report at the February meeting summarizing the number of matches and nonmatches and describing the process used.
Board members asked clarifying questions about whether the office would need to go beyond the sample for investigatory purposes; staff said expansion is possible but would require additional scope decisions and that, for the current challenge, they are following the rules that limit review to the sample.
