Cody, Buildings and Grounds, explained the monument is steel (quarter-inch plate) and described four pieces — two about 6 feet tall — and said one piece has a warp and some welds that need reworking. Commissioners and staff discussed potential utility conflicts, whether new concrete footings are needed, and proposed six additional flagpoles to display military service flags alongside the taller central pole. Commissioner comments referenced an earlier $180,000 marble bid and said Nucor offered to fabricate the steel monument at no charge; commissioners asked staff to obtain pricing for flagpoles and a detailed aerial placement layout to avoid disturbing underground utilities.
"We just need to know how that lays out... so we know we're not digging something up that we shouldn't be digging up," a commissioner said, requesting blue-stakes and an aerial picture. Staff agreed to prepare a placement map and to report back with flagpole costs at the next meeting.
No final action was taken; commissioners instructed staff to return the item with drawings, foundation requirements and cost estimates for flagpoles and lighting so the commission can make a final placement decision.
