District presenters described classroom projects and events tied to Hispanic Heritage Month, invited families to school celebrations and highlighted bilingual programming including dual-language and Seal of Biliteracy participation. "We are deeply appreciative that the Hispanic Latino community has chosen to call the Middletown City School District their home," a district presenter said while summarizing events and student work.
Superintendent Amy Creedon and her team presented the strategic plan priorities for 2024'1: academics (targeting 2'3% proficiency growth and expanded algebra access for 8th graders), culture and engagement (restorative practices and family nights), and financial responsiveness (aim to keep the tax levy increase at or below 2%). The superintendent noted the district's graduation data for the 2020 cohort: overall graduation rate of 93%, with Hispanic students at 92%, black students at 94% and English-language learners at 83%.
Board members praised the district's educators and parents for work shown at open houses and applauded community partnerships. The meeting also featured a performance by the Mitty Mariachi Ensemble, led by Amanda Mita and Diana Mars, noted presenters as an example of successful school-based arts programming.
Board members asked clarifying questions about restorative practices, state testing, achievement gaps and the district's plan to reduce chronic absenteeism; staff said additional presentations and data reviews are scheduled for upcoming meetings.
