Two wounded in Middletown shooting; police say victims not cooperating as investigation continues

Middletown police briefed the commission on an active investigation into a shooting that occurred the night before at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Walk Hill Avenue, in which two people sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

"Two people sustained gunshot wounds, neither are life threatening," the Police Chief said, adding that investigators are reviewing video, reinterviewing witnesses and continuing follow-up. The Chief said the victims are not willing to cooperate; one told investigators that it is the department’s job to determine who committed the act.

The Chief described a substantial investigative effort overnight and into the day leading up to the commission meeting: officers processed video and conducted witness follow-ups. He praised officers for their work and said detectives will continue to pursue leads.

In response to a question about a stabbing at a Burger King in the neighboring town of Walk Hill, the Chief said Middletown officers assisted with first aid and scene maintenance but the Walk Hill police department is leading that separate criminal investigation. "We sent officers to the proximity of it. Our officers helped with first aid and just maintaining the scene until the town of Walk Hill took it over," the Chief said.

Following the briefing, the commission approved a motion to move into executive session for personnel matters and to conduct an 18-month probationary interview; the public portion of the meeting ended when the commission entered executive session at 4:43 p.m.

The Chief described the shooting as an active investigation and did not provide suspect names or additional identifying details. No charges or arrests were announced at the meeting.
