KINGMAN, Ariz. — Mayor Ken Watkins and the Kingman City Council presented a proclamation and the key to the city to Tarek Skubal during a special meeting and city presentation on Dec. 17 at the Mohave County Board of Supervisors Auditorium.
The proclamation recognized Skubal as the recipient of the 2024 American League Cy Young Award, noting a Triple Crown performance in his league and declaring the award was earned by unanimous vote. Mayor Ken Watkins read the proclamation and presented a plaque and the ceremonial key to the city.
"By unanimous vote, he is the winner of the 2024 American League Cy Young Award," Watkins said while reading the proclamation. The proclamation also recounted Skubal's early play at Kingman Academy of Learning, his college tenure at Seattle University, and his selection by the Detroit Tigers in the 2018 Major League Baseball draft.
Skubal, who accepted the honor with family members in attendance, announced a $10,000 donation to the Kingman Little League. "So, on behalf of myself and my family, I'd like to present a check, for $10,000 to the Kingman Little League," he said. City officials indicated they would coordinate follow-up logistics for the donation.
Council members and city leaders offered brief congratulations. A vice mayor recalled watching Skubal in high school, Councilor Savage and Councilmember Keith Walker praised him as a role model for young athletes, and members of the audience included youth Little League players.
Skubal thanked the city and the community, reflected on growing up in Kingman and the local youth programs that helped shape his career, and closed his remarks with a lighthearted, "As always, go Tigers." His mother, Laura, also spoke about the importance of community support for children and thanked coaches, teachers and family.
The special meeting opened with a short video tribute highlighting the honoree's pitching and competitive traits and concluded after the presentation. Mayor Watkins closed by encouraging young attendees to "keep your dreams alive" before adjourning the event.
No formal votes on municipal business were taken during the special presentation; the council's regular meeting was scheduled to be held later in the council chambers.
