Gilbert council accepts Community Engagement Task Force report with 111 recommendations

The Gilbert Town Council unanimously accepted the Community Engagement Task Force’s final report Dec. 17 after a presentation by volunteer and community resources manager Melanie Dykstra. The task force, convened in early 2022, produced 111 recommendations across five focus topics: mental health and suicide prevention; human and sex trafficking; domestic violence; homelessness and low-income challenges; and a welcoming and inclusive Gilbert.
Dykstra said the task force held 23 meetings, received 31 presentations, reviewed more than a dozen reports and used a compression-planning approach to prioritize feasible actions. Several recommendations have already moved forward, she said, and the report includes timeframes and suggested partners (nonprofits, faith-based groups, schools) for implementation. Council members thanked the volunteers and staff and emphasized the need to publish the report and set actionable priorities rather than let it sit on a shelf.
Council Member Kathy Tilke moved to accept the report; the motion passed 6-0. Staff said the report will be published on the town website and that departments will coordinate follow-up on prioritized items.
