City secures $40,000 National Trust grant to move May Hicks house; relocation planned for late January

During reports, staff announced that the National Trust awarded a $40,000 grant to support relocating the May Hicks house. Staff said the city is finalizing the grant paperwork, routing a contract to the selected building mover, and has identified a temporary city parcel near Butler Avenue for staging. The mover who will handle this relocation is the same mover used previously for the Sago Lily house, and staff said they are looking to late January for the move, contingent on final contracting and approvals.
Staff noted the city is also pursuing additional funding and identifying a permanent site for the structure. The May Hicks relocation was also listed as an agenda item for the state semi-quincentennial (America 250) committee, which may consider the project as a legacy initiative; staff indicated they will attend that meeting and pursue further funding opportunities.
Commissioners asked to be notified of the timing; staff agreed and suggested the commission could help with outreach, documentation and possible drone/video coverage of the move.
