At the start of the Oct. 10 meeting of the City Planning Commission, President Monique Lachey read the commission’s racial equity value statement and said commissioners should center the needs of communities most harmed by systemic racism in planning work.
“Equitable planning demands that race does not determine whether or not one thrives in Los Angeles,” Lachey said, adding that the commission’s goal is to create affordable, prosperous, resilient and healthy communities where all Angelenos feel they belong. She also suggested that, in the future, each commissioner should have an opportunity to read the statement.
The remark framed the opening of the meeting and preceded the director’s report on entitlement and housing activity for fiscal year 2023–24.
