La Center’s Nov. 20 meeting included staff reports and public comments on safety, community events and growth. Commander Sample reported higher self-initiated police activity and calls for service compared with parts of last year, flagged traffic enforcement numbers and said two additional deputies are expected early next year to restore fuller evening coverage.
Administrative Services Director Maria Inskeep reported $66,000 in sales tax disbursements for the month (higher than the prior year), announced a new local-business "passport" program tied to the Christmas festival beginning Dec. 2, and noted gambling-tax receipts and staff trainings. The Christmas festival (Dec. 6–8) will include a bazaar, Santa house calls and vendors; the mayor confirmed fireworks at the tree lighting.
Public commenters focused on traffic safety, street lighting by the middle school and concerns about growth and transparency. Resident Al Fila urged better lighting for pedestrian safety; Melissa Flatt thanked the city for supporting drug take-back efforts and said, "We collected a 116.8 of drugs from 43 participants," while proposing a lockbox program for new housing. Caller Kimberly pressed for more outreach on growth issues and asked who on the TBD board represents local businesses.
Council and staff encouraged participation in upcoming La Center University and other outreach opportunities and said budget and TBD discussions included volunteer advisory participation. Staff said they will continue to track enforcement, event logistics and community engagement.
