Pitt County proclaims January 2025 Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention Month

The Pitt County Board of Commissioners adopted a proclamation on Jan. 13 recognizing January 2025 as Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention Month and commended local organizations for prevention and response efforts.
Pam Strickland of Stop Human Trafficking Now and members of her team — including Vanessa Baraman (training/outreach coordinator), Sheriff Paula Vance (participating in the multidisciplinary team) and board member Veres Dixon — joined the board for the proclamation. The proclamation, read in open session, described human trafficking as involving "the recruitment, harbor, and transportation ... of human beings for the purposes of labor or commercial sexual exploitation through the use of force, fraud, or coercion" and cited Pitt County Coalition Against Human Trafficking partners including NC Stop Human Trafficking, ECU Health, the Center for Family Violence Prevention, and local law enforcement.
The chair noted the courthouse cupola will be lit blue this month with the Emerald Loop lighting system in recognition of the awareness campaign. The proclamation encourages county residents and agencies to support efforts to hold buyers, traffickers and those who look the other way accountable.
The proclamation was adopted by the board and presented to Pam Strickland and the Stop Human Trafficking Now team in a photo opportunity.
