Iowa City P&Z approves two rezonings, starts IC 2030 update process

At its Nov. 20 meeting the commission approved two rezoning recommendations (REZ24-0008 and REZ24-009), approved Sept. 18 minutes, and heard planning updates including execution of a contract to start the IC 2030 comprehensive-plan update.
The Iowa City Planning and Zoning Commission on Nov. 20 voted unanimously to recommend two rezonings to the City Council, approved prior meeting minutes and received updates on city planning work.
The commission recommended approval of REZ24-0008 (a modification to an approved OPD in the Cardinal Heights area to add a 16-unit elder apartment and a rehab/wellness facility) and REZ24-009 (rezoning about 48.6 acres near 500 ACT Drive to Mixed Use, with conditions on platting and street improvements). Both recommendations passed 4-0 and will go to City Council for public hearings likely set for Jan. 7, 2025.
Commissioners approved the Sept. 18, 2024 meeting minutes with a minor textual correction and heard a planning update from staff: the city executed a contract with Confluence (Des Moines) to begin the comprehensive-plan update process. Staff also noted the redemption-center ordinance the commission previously reviewed was approved by council and the tobacco ordinance is on a path to third reading on Dec. 10. The kratom ordinance did not advance.
The meeting concluded after a brief discussion and unanimous voice vote to adjourn.
