P&Z names representatives for Iowa City comprehensive plan steering committee

The Iowa City Planning and Zoning Commission on Dec. 4 nominated three representatives to serve on the city's comprehensive plan update steering committee and approved the nominations by voice vote 7-0.
Anne, city planning staff, said the city has executed a consultant agreement with Confluence (Des Moines) and is forming a steering committee to advise staff and the consultant, review drafts and help shape final recommendations. She said the committee will likely include about 20'26 community stakeholders, meet roughly seven times for about 90 minutes each, and begin meeting at the end of January.
Commissioners discussed continuity and representation. Several commissioners expressed interest in serving and noted a desire to ensure continuity if an appointee's commission term expires during the process. "I think it would be nice to have someone throughout the entire process," Anne said when the group discussed term limits and possible reappointments. Commissioners agreed the commission's voice should be represented and emphasized diversity among stakeholder seats on the steering committee (housing, public health, environment, economic development, university, school district and employer representation were cited as examples).
Commissioner Craig moved to nominate Chad, Mike and Steve as the commission's representatives; the motion was seconded and approved 7-0. The commission also approved meeting minutes from Nov. 20, 2024 (recorded as approved with one abstention).
