Iowa City pledges funds for senior center windows; design work to start in 2025

"The money is set aside for that," Latasha said regarding the windows, adding that major design and bidding work must align with the city’s capital improvement (CIP) schedule. She said the project will require design teams, technical reviews (plumbing, elevator, accessible pathways) and coordination because the building is historic.
Shorter‑term facility items were also discussed: four bike racks outside the Washington Street entrance were installed after coordination among multiple departments; a door between the tower and the senior center is scheduled for repair on Monday; and the 30‑year‑old elevator remains on the capital plan for replacement, with interim adjustments planned.
Members noted the engineering department will temporarily occupy some senior‑center space during renovations elsewhere in the city, which will require internal room reassignments for students and other users for several months. Staff said they will keep commissioners informed of exact construction timing so closures and occupant moves can be coordinated.
No additional fundraising was required for the paid window work, according to staff. Commissioners agreed to continue planning and to involve stakeholders as design work proceeds next year.
