Centennial completes acquisition of Xcel streetlights, plans LED conversion with DOE grant

The City Manager reported to the Centennial City Council on Dec. 10 that the city formally completed acquisition of the streetlight system in Xcel Energy's territory, concluding a multiyear negotiation that began after council direction in 2018.
City staff said the transfer will allow Centennial to reduce per-light tariffs, accelerate LED conversions to save energy and respond more quickly to outages. Contractors are in place to begin the disconnection process and LED-conversion work is expected to start in early 2025.
The manager also said the city received a Department of Energy grant of roughly $160,000 to help offset the cost of LED conversion. Officials said the acquisition creates longer-term opportunities to integrate the streetlight system with smart-city technologies.
City staff asked residents to watch for forthcoming notices explaining how to report outages and streetlight issues under municipal ownership. Staff named several employees who led the multi-year effort and thanked Xcel Energy and the Public Utilities Commission for their roles in the transfer process.
