City staff advised council that Utah’s broadband infrastructure grant program requires preregistration to preserve eligibility for future application rounds. The preregistration itself does not obligate the city to seek funding but allows staff to investigate options and prepare a formal application if desired.
Staff noted the state received approximately $317 million and that the grant requires evaluation of low-cost options and other criteria; matching funds and conditions would be assessed before a full application decision. Council approved the preregistration unanimously and asked staff to update council as staff evaluates costs, matching requirements and potential contractual terms associated with an award.
