Canton high school students urge climate curriculum, green‑job pathways and disaster planning

Four Canton High School students and several peers used the public‑comment period to ask the school committee to sign a collective commitment on climate action and to add climate-related curriculum and preparedness into district planning. Abigail Mulhern described learning about climate through family conversations and urged classroom education on the severity of climate change; Emma Beameister and Jacob Smith highlighted warming historical trends and recent local droughts and flooding and asked the district to prioritize climate disaster planning and curriculum that prepares students for climate-related careers.
The students asked the committee to adopt a CHS Climate Action Club document (described in comments as a "collective commitment") that would include green‑job pathways, curriculum on climate science and local climate disaster drills and protocols. "With safe, clean, and green buildings and spaces, we hope to distance ourselves from unsustainable infrastructure," one student said in favor of the commitment.
Committee members thanked students for their submissions and noted a workshop is scheduled before the next meeting to review shared points; the district said it would continue to engage students and that staff would work to incorporate student feedback into ongoing goal work around communication and community engagement.
