The director of tourism told the committee the museum and tourism efforts are drawing travelers: “Year to date, we are at 5,160 as of June 9th.” The office has been promoting Pacific at events, hosted a Missouri Humanities podcast, and staffed an Explore St. Louis festival booth that led to visitors returning to Red Cedar.
Staff outlined a project to install up to 60 veterans banners along Osage Street and to place other pole banners downtown; banners on some streets are constrained by MoDOT rules that limit pictures and sponsorship text for safety reasons on state roads. The director said cost per banner is about $100 and sponsorships would be first-come, first-served. Staff also described plans to pair banners with QR codes and website content for more information on honorees and hoped to have some elements in place ahead of the Route 66 centennial in 2026.
The tourism report also reviewed upcoming programs — a cleanup day, speaker events, a kids’ entrepreneur day and rotating exhibit changes — and noted continuing work on accessioning and digitizing photos and obituaries. Staff requested volunteers to help with digitization work; the committee discussed but did not authorize any formal contracts or expenditures during the meeting.
