Pacific tourism committee pursues Route 66 centennial grants, plans festivals and interactive signs

A committee member reported that a sponsorship application has been submitted for large, 12-foot interactive Route 66 signs to be placed through town; the committee expects to learn the outcome in January. The grant/sponsorship the committee discussed is tied to Route 66 activities and, if awarded, would be used for entertainment, advertising and prize money for festival events.
Committee members are also working on a Bluegrass Barbecue Festival concept and on banners for the Route 66 Centennial. The group noted 'Christmas on 66' will be held at Red Cedar on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a Route 66 meeting is scheduled for Dec. 17 at 10:30 a.m. Committee members discussed tentative timing for a barbecue festival in late spring or early summer (May or June was discussed by members).
A member suggested asking City Clerk Miss Barfield to provide a detailed tourism budget breakdown showing where tourism-tax revenue and prior approvals have been designated; members said that information will help determine whether new requests are feasible within existing allocations.
The tourism director (Kelly) — who was not present at the meeting but whose written notes were read to the committee — continues to coordinate Centennial committee activities and event outreach. The committee plans to revisit grant outcomes and banner/festival planning at its next meeting.
