Committee advances bill to broaden state veterans' benefits after mixed testimony

Ken Hegeman of the Veterans of Foreign Wars described the bill as "personal" and urged passage so that all who served would be recognized. "Veterans don't get to pick where they go when they serve their time in the service," he said, calling expanded civil-service protections a needed "hand up."
Opponents or those seeking changes asked the Legislature to refine the bill. John Hund (MBI, representing the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association) said the concept is sound but the bill's details should recognize additional sacrifices by those disabled or who served in theaters of war and asked to table the bill to perfect the language. Representatives of the Vietnam Veterans of America argued the bill should include National Guard members who did not perform federal service so that state benefits apply equitably.
Committee members praised veterans' service, discussed possible technical fixes — including whether National Guard service should be eligible — and then voted to move the bill out of committee.
