Residents urge action on Santa Fe Trail safety; mayoral invite set for library tour

During the public-comment portion of the Oct. 7 meeting, a resident told councilors that a March petition of 92 signatures requesting action on speeding along Santa Fe Trail had not yet produced results and urged more signage and enforcement to protect children and drivers.
"We need signs that say children at play... I have small children and I'd like to know what it takes to get moving on that road," the resident said, adding that drivers treat the street like a racetrack and that teachers and students are being delayed.
Mary Pat Aveli, co-chair of volunteer efforts for Sip and Stroll and Rockin' & Rollin', thanked the council for support and reported heavy out-of-town attendance. Aveli announced that Governor Parsons has accepted an invitation to visit the library on Oct. 23 for a tour and public remarks; she said the governor, who authored the book No Turning Back, may bring signed copies to present to the library.
City staff gave several operational notices: an online water-billing transition will take systems offline Oct. 17–29 (payments by ACH, in person or by mail remain options), and the city will add chlorine to the water system from Oct. 1–31. Staff also sought council approval for a half-block street closure on Sixth Street for the 'Witchy Weekend' tourism event; staff reported affected business owners had been consulted and the council approved the closure.
These public comments and announcements preceded the council's business agenda and prompted staff follow-up items on signage, enforcement and event logistics.
