The Wallsburg Planning Commission voted Aug. 27 to recommend that the town board approve a building‑permit request for a small accessory greenhouse listed in the agenda as Millett / Ash Adams; the applicant, who identified herself at the meeting as Carrie Beckham, said the structure is a non‑permanent, anchored frame to extend the family’s growing season and that the project is supported by a government grant.
Beckham told commissioners the greenhouse has no planned permanent concrete foundation, will not use town water or conventional electric service (she said a small solar light is possible), and will be anchored according to manufacturer instructions to resist wind. “It’s literally just…I already have a garden area there, but I wanna extend the growing season,” Beckham said, adding she sought the permit because the grant required documentation.
Commissioners asked technical questions about permanence, anchoring for wind, and whether county review or a building‑review fee applies. Members discussed whether the town should continue to require the standard $250 building‑review fee for accessory structures when an application can be processed in a single meeting, and several advocated creating a simplified town agricultural exemption so small growers can more easily obtain local approval even where the county’s ag rules are stricter.
After questions and clarifications, the commission moved, seconded and approved a recommendation that the town board consider the applicant’s permit; commissioners will provide a letter and expect the applicant to appear at the town‑board meeting on Sept. 5.
