The Wallsburg Planning Commission on Aug. 27 recommended that the town board approve a building permit for Craig Kaiser’s accessory garage, saying the revised pole‑building design meets local zoning rules.
Kaiser told the commission he previously had a permit that expired after two years while family health problems delayed the build. He said the new structure is a pole building four feet narrower than the original design, in the same location, and that he will follow required drainage measures. “I had that approved, had the permit, and then we had a lot of health issues,” Kaiser said, explaining the reapplication.
Commission members walked through the town’s accessory‑building checklist and confirmed that the application is permitted in the proposed zone and appears to comply with height, setback and lot‑coverage requirements. Commissioners also reviewed infrastructure and parking items and noted that stamped plans would likely trigger the county’s technical‑review processes. Several members expressed concern that the town’s minimum 3‑foot side setback leaves little room for fence installation and maintenance; one commissioner described 3 feet as “awful close,” though they did not change the code during the meeting.
After asking clarifying questions about utilities and site drainage, a commissioner moved that the planning commission recommend the town board approve the Kaiser permit; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. Commissioners said they will prepare a recommendation letter and asked Kaiser to appear at the town‑board meeting on Sept. 5 to answer any questions.
The decision from the town board will be the next formal step. The planning commission’s vote was a recommendation only; any county review or permit fees required by the county remain separate from the town’s advisory action.
