The Los Angeles City Council convened the morning of Dec. 13 to present a formal tribute to Congressman Tony Cardenas for more than 28 years of public service at the state, municipal and federal levels. Councilmember Imelda Padilla introduced the ceremony, and Mayor Karen Bass, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla, former officials and community leaders delivered remarks praising Cardenas’ legislative leadership and mentorship.
Speakers credited Cardenas with work on juvenile justice reform, expansion of clean energy initiatives at the Department of Water and Power, water recycling efforts, and support for immigrant and at‑risk communities. Mayor Bass recalled shared work in Congress and local collaborations; Senator Padilla and others recounted Cardenas’ role mentoring future leaders from the San Fernando Valley.
Cardenas accepted the recognition and thanked colleagues, family and staff. In his remarks he reflected on the responsibilities of public office and noted difficult personal choices he had made in the name of principle. “If you don't have the support of the people closest to you, this job is impossible,” he said in the chamber.
Councilmember Padilla introduced a resolution declaring Nov. 1 as Tony Cardenas Day and presented a piece of art on behalf of CD 6. Multiple council members then offered short tributes and anecdotes.
Ending: The council’s formal recognition concluded with applause and the presentation of a resolution and commemorative art piece. The tribute was largely celebratory and ceremonial; it did not involve formal policy action beyond the honorary resolution.
