Huntington City Council elects Mike Shockley chair, Todd Sweeney vice chair

The Huntington City Council elected Councilmember Mike Shockley as council chair and Councilmember Todd Sweeney as vice chair during a special call meeting on Jan. 8, 2025. The council conducted nominations, heard brief statements from nominees, and completed roll-call votes for both offices.

Councilmember Holly Smith Mount said she approaches the chair as a post of "responsibility, accountability, and resourcefulness," saying she favors distributing agenda items across committees so more members have "that first touch on that agenda item," and stressed that meetings should be "effective, efficient, and civil."

The clerk conducted a roll-call vote for chair. After members announced their choices, the tally announced by the clerk was seven votes for Mike Shockley and four votes for Holly Smith Mount; the chair congratulated Mister Shockley on being elected.

Nominations for vice chair followed. Councilmembers Tia Rumbaugh, Todd Sweeney and Holly Smith Mount were nominated. Nominations were closed by motion and the clerk again conducted a roll-call vote. The announced tally was six votes for Todd Sweeney and five votes for Holly Smith Mount; the council recorded Mister Sweeney as the vice chair.

Following the two votes the council moved to adjourn and ended the special call meeting.
