Milan superintendent announces intent to retire after 33 years

Superintendent Brian Gierbaugh announced Dec. 11 that he intends to retire from Milan Area Schools effective June 30, 2025, ending a 33-year career with the district that began in 1992. Gierbaugh described his decision as ‘‘with mixed emotions’’ and thanked staff, students, families and boards that supported him over three decades.
Gierbaugh also highlighted district operational savings from participating in a consortium electricity-purchasing program: the district saved about $96,019.80 for July 2023–June 2024 and cumulative savings of approximately $1,907,504.93 since joining the program. He said the district pursues grants and cost-saving strategies continually and outlined recent grant work in his remarks.
The board said it will conduct a deliberate search for a successor. The board plans to consult the district administrative team, union leadership, the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) and other professional agencies, and to solicit community input at a Big Red Board Chat scheduled for Jan. 22, 2025. The personnel committee (Gutierrez, Farrow and the presiding officer) will lead initial work and return recommendations to the full board.
Board members offered public appreciation and reflected on Gierbaugh’s local leadership, including fund-balance improvements, facility projects completed under his tenure and the passage of the district’s first sinking fund. The board emphasized the goal of a ‘‘timely and seamless transition’’ and confirmed Gierbaugh will remain superintendent through June 30, 2025 to assist with continuity.
