"Our current school year calendar is out of compliance," the administrator said, describing DESE's requirement that graduation occur no more than 12 days after the seniors' last class day.
Administration outlined options to bring the calendar into compliance: move seniors' last class day to June 2 and schedule graduation earlier in the week (Thursday/Friday) or on the following Saturday; convert Good Friday (April 18) into a full or half day of school so the last student day would move earlier; or move the seniors' last class date and encourage attendance for seniors. Officials noted logistical challenges (families and staff having plans, contractual considerations for Good Friday) and that some districts have found DESE enforcement inflexible.
Committee members debated the tradeoffs, including the impact on planned family events and religious observance. The administration said it will solicit community feedback and return to the committee at the next meeting with recommendations rather than make a decision that night. That timeline aims to allow time for families and staff planning before a final choice is made.
