School committee accepts donations, approves field trips and surplus textbooks in consent agenda

Swampscott — During its Dec. 12 meeting the Swampscott School Committee accepted two philanthropic gifts and approved routine items by consent.
The committee approved a $7,500 donation from the Wetherspoon Charitable Foundation to be used at the discretion of the Swanston High School television program. The chair read the donation offer and the committee moved, seconded and accepted the gift.
The committee also accepted a $3,200 gift from the Geron Foundation to provide financial assistance for students to attend the sixth‑grade ecology trip. Both donors were thanked by committee members and district staff.
Other items included in the consent agenda and approved by motion were the high school field trip to Spain, the Swanston High School boys varsity basketball tournament trip to Springfield (Hoop Hall) Jan. 17–19, and the declaration of surplus textbooks identified after collection reviews. The committee adopted the consent agenda by a single motion and then voted to adjourn.
What’s next: The superintendent’s office will process the donations and ensure program managers apply funds as designated; surplus textbooks will be handled according to district policy.
