DESE completes interviews in Auburn—s EL tiered focus monitoring; district to receive report within 60 days

Auburn administrators briefed the school committee on the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education—s tiered focus monitoring of the district—s English learner (EL) program, saying interviews with staff were completed and a DESE report is expected within 60 days.
The district submitted student records and program documents as part of last year—s self-assessment; because Auburn has fewer than 150 English learners, DESE conducted interviews via Zoom. The interviews reviewed program assessments, identification and exit criteria, parent and community engagement, curriculum and professional development, recordkeeping and evaluation of student progress, the administrator said.
The district identified Ashley Isgrohe as a leader of the EL program and said the district is adopting an electronic platform called Elevation to consolidate EL student records, simplify uploads from existing Google folders and alert staff when progress reports are due. Administrators said Elevation will make it easier to group students by targeted needs, complete progress-report forms and preserve records during school transitions.
DESE—s follow-up report will list commendations and areas for improvement; administrators said the review is intended as support and guidance rather than a punitive action.
