Assembly Bill 4811 (first reprint) was favorably released by the Appropriations Committee on Sept. 23. The bill makes a $20 million supplemental appropriation for summer tuition aid grants for summer 2025 and provides conditional authority for transferring additional resources into summer tuition aid accounts.
Jennifer Keys Maloney of the New Jersey Association of State Colleges told the committee the bill increases summer TAG coverage from an earlier 50% to 75% of course costs and said the additional subsidy makes a marked improvement; she urged lawmakers to consider full funding (an additional roughly $8 million, as discussed in committee) to bring summer coverage closer to the previous funding levels and better support students’ on-time graduation. Another witness noted that about 13,000 students received roughly $31 million in grants in the prior year.
Committee members said the 75% coverage rate is an improvement and the bill was favorably released to be considered in subsequent legislative steps.
