Committee advances modernization of primary care loan redemption program
Summary
AB 2801, amended and favorably released, renames and expands the Primary Care Practitioner Loan Redemption Program and clarifies placement/prioritization to improve placements, according to the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians.
Assembly Bill 2801, as amended, was favorably released by the Appropriations Committee on Sept. 23. The bill would rename and extend eligibility for the Primary Care Practitioner Loan Redemption Program and make other changes intended to improve placement of program participants.
Claudia Leoni testified on behalf of the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians, saying the program exists but has not been modernized to address placement shortcomings. She told the committee the bill codifies recent budget upgrades and would give the administering agency clearer direction on prioritizing placements and encouraging placements in private primary care and hospital-owned practices as well as federally qualified health centers.
A roll-call vote recorded the committee’s favorable release; the record shows one member abstained on the measure.
