Committee approves amendments to increase penalties for assaulting law enforcement and require certain disease testing

The Assembly Appropriations Committee voted Sept. 23 to amend and favorably release Assembly Bill 2378 (first reprint) and its identical Senate counterpart, Senate Bill 3201 (first reprint). Both measures would upgrade certain penalties for assaulting law enforcement officers and require offenders be tested for communicable diseases in specified circumstances.
The committee record listed both proponents and opponents on slips but included no extended testimony during the floor session. After taking a motion to amend and release the bills, the committee approved the measures by roll call and the bills were favorably released for further legislative consideration.
Chair and committee staff also moved a related procedural motion to request a racial and ethnic community criminal justice and public safety impact statement under NJSA 52:11-57.1 for AB 2378 and several related measures; the motion passed.
