The Assembly Appropriations Committee on Sept. 23 favorably released Assembly Bill 1424, which would formally establish a New Jersey Transit (NJT) customer advocate office and set out the role’s duties and accountability measures.
Sponsor Assemblywoman Hayter said the position was created by a 2018 law backed by Senator Loretta Weinberg but “was never really properly created within the New Jersey Transit Agency.” Hayter told the committee the post has been vacant for almost four years and that AB 1424 would “spell out and identify what the customer advocate has to deliver” and “provide some kind of accountability from New Jersey Transit.”
The committee conducted a roll call on a motion to release the bill; the motion passed and the measure was recorded as favorably released.
The bill drew no extended public testimony in committee; members did not propose amendments on the floor. The committee record does not show additional statutory citations beyond sponsor remarks referencing the 2018 enactment that originally authorized the advocate position.
The committee’s favorable release sends AB 1424 to the next legislative step for further consideration.
