The board paused its agenda to honor 22 students from Hopewell Valley Central High School who were named Commended Scholars or National Merit semifinalists.
Ms. Riley introduced the recognition and summarized the National Merit Scholarship Program's selection process, noting that roughly 1.6 million students enter the qualifying test annually and 50,000 high scorers are recognized. "Out of the 1,600,000 entrants from across the country, we are recognizing 22 students who scored in the top 3% in the country and have earned the designation of Commended Scholar or semifinalist," she said.
Several students came forward to introduce themselves and share brief "fun facts" publicly, including Eileen Zang (a semifinalist) and others who noted extracurricular involvement such as tennis, music and athletics. The meeting paused briefly for a hallway photo so staff could document the recognition.
The board congratulated the students and praised their academic and extracurricular contributions.
