Framingham School Committee unanimously removes Harmony GroveIB designation

The Framingham School Committee voted unanimously on Dec. 4 to approve the administration's recommendation to remove the International Baccalaureate (IB) designation from Harmony Grove Elementary School. Judy Steyer (District 5) presented the motion on behalf of the district's Teaching and Learning subcommittee.
Steyer said the change is intended not to eliminate IB practices but to "integrate" the program's strongest elements across the district and to focus more tightly on literacy and other priorities at Harmony Grove. "This is really more of integration of our program more comprehensively and allowing us to really double down on our literacy focus," Steyer said during committee discussion. Superintendent Dr. Bob Tremblay acknowledged the staff work that supported the IB program and emphasized that no personnel reductions are expected as a result of the designation removal.
Committee members asked how the district would preserve IB tenets and continuity for families. District member Adam Freiberg described IB as "rigorous" and noted the administrative burden of maintaining a site-specific designation; he urged the district to consider pathways that could continue rigor for students as programs evolve. Dr. Tremblay said the office of teaching and learning performed a crosswalk of IB standards against district curriculum to retain "the best tenets" while making them districtwide.
The motion to accept the recommendation to remove Harmony Grove's IB designation passed by roll-call vote with all members voting yes.
The committee closed discussion and moved to the next agenda item. The school department said information from recent MSBA demography work informing district planning will be made available as it becomes public.
