McHenry School District 15 board votes to submit 2025–30 elementary PE waiver to ISBE

The McHenry School District 15 Board of Education voted Dec. 10 to submit a proposed five-year elementary physical education waiver to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
District administrators said the waiver is intended to continue the district’s current elementary schedule for the 2025–2030 school years. "This waiver allows school districts to…look at school code, specifically 27 dash 6, which itemizes in that code that students attend physical education at a minimum about 3 days a week," a district official stated during the public hearing, adding that middle schools in the district already provide PE daily and that the existing elementary waiver, in effect for the past five years, will conclude at the end of this school year.
The superintendent asked the board to "vote in favor of the proposed waiver that we would send to ISBE officially tomorrow," noting the waiver would permit elementary students to attend PE a minimum of one to two times per week instead of the three-times-per-week minimum cited in section 27-6.
Board members discussed the limits that facilities and scheduling place on increasing PE frequency. One board member said, "I just wish that we could do more, but I know that there's more on the horizon," and pledged support for the waiver while urging pursuit of future enhancements.
A motion to submit the waiver passed by roll call. The transcript records recorded yes votes from board members in attendance; the motion carried and the district will forward the waiver to ISBE for review.
The hearing on the waiver had been publicly noticed and kept open until 7:00 p.m. before the formal board action later in the meeting.
