Caledonia high‑school senior asks board to revisit virtual‑learning attendance rule after snow‑day cancellation

Jed Black, a senior at Caledonia High School, addressed the Caledonia Community Schools Board on Dec. 16 to appeal the district’s virtual‑learning attendance enforcement.

“My name is Jed Black. I’m a senior at Caledonia High School,” he told the board, saying he began the district’s virtual program this semester and that it “has been the most successful semester of my high school career.” He said he was informed on Dec. 13 that he would be required to return to in‑person learning because he had not met the program’s six‑hours‑per‑week attendance requirement. Jed told the board that an expected Thursday session had been canceled for inclement weather and that he could not make up those hours that week.

Jed said he sought help from the director of the virtual‑learning program, his counselor and the principal but “have not been able to come to a solution,” so he brought the matter to the board. He said he maintains strong grades (he reported a weighted GPA of 4.17) and good behavior, and asked the board to consider a remedy that would allow him and other students to remain in the virtual program.

Board members did not take immediate action during public comment. The superintendent and administrative team indicated public‑comment procedures limit interchange during the meeting but that staff follow‑up would occur afterward.
