LSBA adviser showcases Assembly policy platform, offers training and crosswalk support

Dr. Janet Pope of the Louisiana School Boards Association told the St. Mary Parish policy committee the Assembly policy platform uses a numerical codification system and provides a centralized, real-time environment for drafting and adopting model school-district policies.

"It is all real time," Pope said, explaining that designated staff can access drafts and finals and that ‘‘if Elodie is in a whole board meeting and you approve the manual, she clicks a button and it automatically goes in.’’ She described a crosswalk process to map the district's existing manual to the model text and identified a tentative rollout calendar that starts with section 00 (manual setup) and section 100 (board operations).

Pope cited Natchitoches as an example of an early adopter already live on the platform and recommended that district department heads — particularly human resources and maintenance — review draft sections for local nuances before committee or board votes. She also said the association can provide on-site training or a weekend workshop to work through sections 00 and 100 together.

Committee members asked about legal review. Pope said the platform content has been reviewed by in-house counsel (reference to Danny Garrett) and by external reviewer John Geiss for certain human-resources items; she advised that adopting unchanged model text generally does not require additional review, but any local edits should be forwarded to counsel before final adoption.

The presentation concluded with Pope offering follow-up support, emphasizing that most statutory links and guidance are embedded in the platform and noting that items still under review by the attorney general or governor would not be included until cleared. The committee discussed scheduling a January workshop and agreed staff should be given access to relevant sections to begin departmental review.
