Hudsonville board honors trustee Mark Davis, approves bond, insurance and staffing actions

The Hudsonville Public Schools Board of Education on Dec. 12 honored trustee Mark Davis for more than three decades of service and approved a series of routine and finance items, including an authorizing resolution that will allow the district to refund its 2015 bonds if market conditions are favorable.

A public comment period opened the meeting’s substantive remarks when Gwen Shoy praised Mark Davis “for his 34 years of service,” citing a string of facility projects and decades of continuity on the board. Dana O’Dell and multiple board members offered additional tributes before the board received a formal state tribute, read by the presiding officer, signed by two state legislators.

On business items, Pat of the district’s financial advisor (PFM) summarized a proposed authorizing resolution to give district administration authority to refund both series of the district’s 2015 bonds “if the market conditions are right,” with the district targeting April–June as the likely pricing window. The motion to approve was moved by Mark and seconded by Greg; the board approved the resolution by voice vote.

Dr. Andrew Jack presented an "80/20" insurance-contribution resolution that the administration said aligns current certified-staff benefit contributions with the district’s agreement with the education association and noted potential impacts if Michigan’s Public Act 152 changes. Dr. Jack stated the resolution simply affirms the existing 80/20 contribution arrangement; the board approved the resolution.

Human resources presented two certified hires: Addison Bauer, appointed to a high-school English position after graduating from Grand Valley State University, and a candidate identified as Andrew (first name only in the record) for a 5–6 ASD categorical classroom position. The board approved the hires.

The board also completed a second and final reading of board policy 5771 (certain seizure) with no recommended changes, and advanced a package of first readings that included clarifications tied to federal funds and new language addressing artificial intelligence; those policies will return for subsequent consideration. Course proposals that were reviewed at a prior work session likewise received a first-reading approval.

Administrators gave a SOAR5 strategic-plan update that highlighted staff wellness and mental-health expansion: Angie Briggs completed training to deliver Mental Health First Aid, district plans call for training additional paraprofessionals, and the district said it added three mental-health specialists plus an additional counselor funded through a reworked grant to expand services K–12. Administrators said therapists currently carry caseloads “over 60 students” in some assignments.

Facilities and operations updates covered safety-camera installation and transportation staffing. The district said elementary-building camera wiring is essentially complete but requires an additional five to six cameras in specific locations; bus video is being integrated into the district network so principals can view footage without intermediary steps. The district reported a pilot quasi assistant transportation-director position improved operations and that funding for a permanent posting is available through categorical funds the district has used for two years.

Board members repeatedly thanked staff and community volunteers for holiday and outreach efforts: fundraising that will direct roughly $1,200 per family to 13 identified families, Toys for Tots support for about 106 families, and a "Shop with a Hero" event serving 51 students. Student council reported upcoming activities, including a January 10 blood drive and ongoing student-led food drives.

The meeting closed after the formal tribute to Mark Davis and a motion to adjourn.
