Teachers and students honored: West Maple's empathy project, principal wins Michigan Lottery award; Groves debate team celebrated

The Birmingham Public Schools Board of Education used part of its Dec. 17 meeting to highlight student learning and extracurricular achievements.

West Maple Elementary teachers presented the Empathy Project, a cross-grade program that pairs first- and fourth-grade students to study issues such as food scarcity and water pollution, conduct research and build prototypes for solutions. "This project's really centered in empathy and compassion," said Madeline Partham, a first-grade teacher at West Maple, describing classroom activities that included budgeting exercises and a volunteer visit to the Oakland Hope food bank. Teachers said an empathy museum showcasing student prototypes is expected in May.

Superintendent Roberson also presented West Maple Principal Jason Pezemowska with the Michigan Lottery's Excellence in Education award. Roberson noted the award traditionally goes to teachers and praised Pezemowska's leadership at West Maple; Pezemowska thanked staff and families for the support that contributed to the recognition.

The board also recognized the Groves High School debate team and its coaches for recent competitive success, including state and national tournament appearances. Coaches credited district resources and staff support for the program's achievements and invited board and central administration members to attend upcoming tournaments.

The recognitions received applause from the board, which encouraged trustees and administrators to visit the empathy museum and the debate team in their upcoming competitions.
