Votes at a glance: Consent agenda, donations accepted and superintendent evaluation

Several formal actions were taken by the board during the Dec. 16 meeting.

Consent agenda (Items 2.1—6): The board approved minutes, personnel recommendations and other routine items including payment of October bills totaling $9,592,918 and authorization of listed professional legal payments. Motion for items 2.1—6 was made and supported (motion recorded as by Lauterbach with support by McFarland); the motion carried by voice vote.

Gifts (Item 6.2): The board accepted gifts totaling $30,957 to support district programs: $12,540 from the HH Dow High Sports Boosters for a swim scoreboard at the Dow High community pool; $9,417 in student support items from the Midland Area Community Foundation; and $9,000 from Dow High hockey parents. Motion to accept gifts was made by McFarland, supported by Horowitz; voice vote carried.

Closed session motion and superintendent evaluation: The board voted to enter closed session under MCL 15.268(8)(e) to consult legal counsel regarding pending litigation and MCL 15.268(8)(a) to consider the superintendent's personnel evaluation. After closed session the board approved the superintendent's evaluation rating of "effective" using the MASB rubric. The motion to approve the rating was made by Lauterbach, supported by McFarland and passed unanimously.

Timing and next steps: Some items (the consent agenda and gifts) were procedural approvals; the superintendent evaluation was acted on following the closed-session review and will be reflected in personnel records. The bond preliminary application (Item 3.4) — a separate, substantive vote — is covered in a separate report.
