Board spotlights student achievements; district earns Meritorious Budget Award
Summary
The board recognized student organizations and athletic teams, including Rho Kappa students who partnered with Hope Clinic and state champion athletic teams, and celebrated the district’s eighth consecutive Meritorious Budget Award from ASBO International.
The Rochester Community Schools Board of Education dedicated part of its meeting to recognizing student achievements across academics, athletics, and club activities and to celebrating a district budget award.
Erin Mize introduced Stoney Creek High School's Rho Kappa (Social Studies National Honor Society) chapter and described the students' year-long service project with the Hope Clinic, noting the group raised personal care items for people in need and earned first-place recognition at the Michigan Social Studies Olympiad. "These students have embraced the challenge of organizing and executing a long term service project that will make a tangible difference in their community," Mize said.
The board also honored Adams High School's boys soccer team for winning the Division 1 state championship after an 18-2-4 season and a 2-0 final against Byron Center. Coach Chicky called it the program's third state title and congratulated players and coaches in attendance.
Brady Kreitz and Mark Ware presented on behalf of the Rochester Mountain Bike Team, which began in 2019 and has grown to roughly 70 students and numerous coaches; Kreitz said the team repeated as state champions in 2024 and requested consideration for gym credit recognition for the club sport.
Separately, the board recognized the district's finance team: an Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) representative congratulated Rochester Community Schools on receiving the Meritorious Budget Award for fiscal year 2024–2025 — the district’s eighth consecutive Meritorious Budget Award — and a Certificate of Excellence in financial reporting for the sixth time. The ASBO representative noted the awards recognize clarity and nationally recognized budget presentation standards; the board thanked Matthew McDaniel and the business office staff.
Student representatives from Adams High (Stephanie Javieras), Rochester High (Anna Grumwald), and Stoney Creek High (Emma Chico), and an IA representative (Minjoon Kim) provided school updates: spirit-week activities, canned-food and toy drives (including a nearly $35,000 canned-food drive reported by Adams student council), club achievements (DECA qualifiers, robotics, esports), SAT prep efforts, and various winter concerts and competitions.
The recognition segment emphasized community service and student-led initiatives; no formal board action or policy change resulted from these presentations.
