Florence School District 1 honors educators and students; Warren Coker named Hidden Hero for Unified Sports

Florence — The Florence School District 1 Board of Trustees dedicated most of its meeting to recognizing district staff, coaches and students for awards and achievements.
Pam Little McDaniel introduced Rahsaan Perry of West Florence High School as the South Carolina Association of School Administrators High School Assistant Principal of the Year. Colleagues including Jeffrey Gaines of Snead Middle School and West Florence principal Matthew Dowdell praised Perry’s leadership, STEM coordination and mentoring through the Sharper Knights program. Perry said he went into administration to "impact schools on a larger level" and called himself proud to be a Knight.
Trustees then honored student-athletes and coaches from multiple district schools with all-state and regional citations in volleyball, tennis, cross country, swimming and other sports. The meeting included recognition of music students selected for the South Carolina All-State Honor Choirs; teachers and principals were named as the students were called forward.
Superintendent Dr. O’Malley introduced Warren Coker, West Florence’s physical-education teacher, as the district’s December Hidden Hero for his work launching a Unified Sports PE program that pairs general-education and exceptional-education students. Coker described the program’s growth across the district and said he hopes it reaches all middle schools and high schools.
Board members and the superintendent offered congratulations and thanked coaches and teachers for their work supporting students.
The recognition segments included opportunities for photos and applause; the meeting then moved to public comment and routine board business.
