Board hears Robert E. Howard Elementary design, committee recommends 'Wolverines' and blue-green-orange colors

Architects and district staff briefed the Orangeburg County School Board on the design, phasing and proposed identity for the new Robert E. Howard Elementary School at the Dec. 10 meeting.
Representatives from LS3P (presented in the meeting) described the updated exterior renderings and site plan for the replacement on the Robert E. Howard Middle School site, noting the design targets a roughly 1,000-student capacity in a roughly 120,000-square-foot facility and that construction is intended to begin in the spring with phasing to keep students safe while work progresses.
District staff explained the community engagement process: from Nov. 4 to Dec. 2 the district collected 229 survey responses, then a 16-member stakeholder committee reviewed submissions and recommended the Wolverine as the mascot and blue, green and orange as the primary colors. Staff noted the committee's recommendation also calls for honoring Wilkinson High School's maroon in a foyer display to recognize legacy schools consolidated into the new campus.
Board members sought clarification about how the committee's review related to the public survey (committee members reviewed and recommended options based on the full set of responses) and asked follow-up questions about seating capacity and how final logo and finishes will be developed. Architects said current renderings use placeholder imagery for mascots and that final mascot artwork and color finishes will be prepared for board review.
The architects indicated the district has submitted design development materials to the Office of School Facilities and plans to submit construction documents in January so MB Con can complete GMP pricing and prepare to start construction pending approvals, including DOT concurrence for traffic stacking. The architects stated the team will present final finishes and logo options to the district in coming weeks.
No formal board vote on mascot or final design was recorded in the meeting.
