Beaufort County executive committee approves agenda, finalizes Aug. 23 work session items

Tina, executive committee chair, called the Beaufort County Board of Education executive committee to order at 5 p.m. on Aug. 12 and the group unanimously approved the evening's agenda and three sets of committee minutes.
The action cleared the way for the committee to finalize the Aug. 23 work-session agenda, which staff presented as including an annual work plan, discussion of the future of the DESC office, bus-route approvals, crisis-management training, and an opening-day strategic-goals presentation. Chair Tina said the meeting will be held virtually and livestreamed on the district's YouTube channel.
Dr. Rodriguez told the committee the opening-day strategic-goals presentation was delivered to employees around July 31 and was requested to be shared with the board. "That's essentially a presentation I had done for employees on the very first day," Dr. Rodriguez said, noting the material is suitable for board review rather than final reported test ratings.
Staff also advised board members that district-issued iPads will need to be brought to the district for a full reimage and a Microsoft update, and that devices will be unavailable during the work session day. "They have to reimage because they're updating it to the new Microsoft," Robin said; staff said hard copies of meeting materials will be provided for members who cannot access their devices that day.
Board member Carlton asked staff to prepare a one-page matrix or crosswalk showing the legislative, judicial and executive-branch program requirements for different educational options — public, private and charter — to help normalize comparative standards. Dr. Rodriguez said staff can prepare a concise chart and the committee discussed whether to place it on the Aug. 23 agenda or defer to the November work session depending on the status of an item listed as potentially embargoed by the state (SC Ready).
Staff announced that the May River High School band is scheduled to perform at the following day's meeting but might arrive late because of bus routing; the committee agreed to proceed with the agenda and allow the band to perform upon arrival.
The committee confirmed scheduling logistics: the next board meeting is set for Sept. 3, and the next agenda-setting meeting will be Monday, Aug. 26 at 5 p.m., to be held via Zoom. The chair adjourned the meeting by unanimous consent.
