Beaufort County board schedules special meeting on student expulsion appeals; executive session will cover property, contracts and charter update

The Beaufort County Board of Education’s executive committee on July 1 said it will convene a special called meeting in mid‑July to hear student expulsion appeals, with attorney Dave Duff serving as legal advisor.

Chair Christina Gwas told committee members that the board is considering July 10 or July 11 for the special meeting and that the session could run about two and a half hours. The meeting date had not been finalized at the July 1 agenda‑setting session.

Gwas read a list of items slated for executive session that the committee plans to address in advance of or during the special meeting: a proposed property sale in northern Beaufort County, a property purchase in southern Beaufort County, the custodial services contract, a 30‑day extension on an ESS contract, updates on pending cases, an employment matter, a personnel ratification report, an adult education report and a Riverview Charter update presented by Andrea White. "That is a lot of stuff," Gwas said as she reviewed the list, noting limited time for the committee to cover all items.

Committee members discussed whether the volume of business warranted an earlier start time for executive session; one member said she would not be available until after 5 p.m. because of work obligations. General counsel Wendy Cartlidge told the board she would be brief during the legal update.

No formal vote on the special meeting date was recorded at the July 1 session; Gwas said the board would confirm the date once it coordinated availability with students, families and attorneys.
