Student advisory group launches research into dropout and belonging among EL and Hispanic students

Two student representatives presented their cabinet’s plan to research why Hispanic/Latinx and English learner students show concerning graduation and dropout indicators in district and state data.
Cole Kizia and Genesis Castro, members of the superintendent’s Centering Youth Voices advisory cabinet, said they chose the topic after reviewing DESE and district figures that show lower four‑year graduation rates and higher dropout rates for the student groups they study. The students described a root-cause research design that will combine quantitative survey questions and qualitative interviews and focus groups; initial exploration used the district climate survey and public DESE statistics to identify questions about social isolation, belonging and cultural awareness.
Bobby Bishop, executive director for diversity, equity and inclusion, praised the student work and said the cabinet’s findings could inform district practice. Students said they intend to refine research questions, collect additional data, and return to the committee with findings and recommendations.
