Board votes: executive session for personnel, consent items, policy updates approved unanimously

The Topeka Public Schools Board of Education (USD 501) recessed into a 30-minute executive session Friday under the personnel exception to the Kansas Open Meetings Act, then returned to open session and approved several routine and action items unanimously.

Doctor Schumacher moved that the board recess for 30 minutes pursuant to the personnel exception of the Kansas Open Meetings Act to discuss confidential personnel matters and to protect the privacy of the individuals discussed; the superintendent and executive staff were invited into the session. The motion was seconded (Mrs. Bowley) and recorded as carrying unanimously. During the executive session the board later moved to extend the recess by 10 minutes; that extension motion was also approved unanimously.

Back in open session, the board approved items by consent and authorized the board president or superintendent to sign special project and purchasing contracts on behalf of the board. The board then approved four policy changes recommended by the policy committee; one change was described as a wording "cleanup" to correct the phrasing about hourly/half-hour pool rentals (the update did not change the fee amount).

All motions recorded in the meeting transcript were described as passing unanimously; the transcript does not include a member-by-member roll-call vote list for these approvals. The meeting closed after a board member requested the board publicly address a matter raised earlier regarding the College Hill Park area; the item was set aside for a future agenda. Doctor Schumacher moved to adjourn and Doctor Bonebrake seconded; the adjournment was marked unanimous.
