Parents demand accountability after Alger Middle School shooting; superintendent lists new safety steps

Several community members used the board—s public comment period to press for accountability after a May shooting connected to Alger Middle School. Jamar Sterling, a youth activist, and Bianca Bridgeforth, a parent, alleged the principal (identified in public comments as Charlie Love or Charlie Lovelady) permitted students to leave school grounds and failed to notify parents or law enforcement before an incident that later resulted in a student being shot.

"It is unethical for a principal to tell students... to leave if you want to leave according to Charlie Lovelady's statements himself," Jamar Sterling said, calling for the principal—s suspension pending investigation and release of video evidence.

Bianca Bridgeforth and Richard Trapp (a parent) said they filed complaints with the district and that they have complaint numbers but have not seen follow‑up. Speakers demanded that the district show video footage and demonstrate a transparent investigative process.

Superintendent Leidrian Roby responded during her remarks, expressing sympathy and listing measures taken since the incident: daily use of metal detectors at the affected school, installation of alarms on exterior doors, increased safety and security staffing, the hiring of a retired mentor teacher to work with the school's team, and expanded community programming (evening openings at Alger). Roby said the district is committed to follow‑up and would reach out to the families who spoke.

Board members acknowledged public concern and emphasized that safety is a priority. The superintendent said the district will continue its investigation and coordination with families and local partners; no personnel disciplinary action was announced during the meeting.
